Miami’s Spartan Gym features circuits and obstacle courses.

Extreme competitions like ultra marathons, Iron Man triathlons, and Tough Mudders have become increasingly popular, but perhaps the most exciting of these is the Spartan Race.

Spartan Races are intense obstacle-filled races that can be as long as marathons.

And now, there’s a place to train like a Spartan.

In Miami, FL at the 1 Hotel South Beach, the Spartan brand has opened up the very first Spartan Gym.

On first glance, the facility looks… Spartan. There aren’t a ton of crowded machines or bright colors or a wall of TVs like you may find in some other mass-appealing gyms. No, at Spartan Gym, everything has a purpose and that purpose is to prepare exercisers for the type of obstacles they may encounter during a Spartan Race.

The relatively barren gym aims to have its members focus more on “function, fitness, and performance.” The distractions are removed. They want to provide a practical training area that results in a “more organic workout.”

Like a Spartan Race, the gym is ever changing. In one of the competitions, the participants do not know what obstacle will come next. The facility attempts to recreate that by changing up what will be available.

In addition to some standard cardio machines, the Spartan Gym has equipment like monkey bars, vertical ropes, cargo nets (for traversing), plyo boxes, and a seven-foot vertical wall.

The Spartan Gym understands that its unusual set up may throw people off at first. Because of this, they offer assessments for new members and will help create a workout plan to address weaknesses.
