New therapy against HIV

New therapy against HIV

According to the latest information, a new therapy against HIV virus should be effective. After a first human trial the results are positive! The secret is in the neutralizing antibodies, who should reduce the amount of an HIV virus in the patients’ blood. As you know, there are some people who have a better defense from this disease. This therapy uses clones of immune proteins whom those people. This is still a new therapy, but scientists are hoping that in the near future they can make it more effective.

Our immune system defends our bodies from viruses and infections with antibodies (a protein based weapons). The main problem with the HIV virus is that it is too strong for antibodies, so they cannot eliminate it. Patients who were injected with the antibodies from people who have a higher resistance to the HIV virus, were able to slow down the progress of the virus. These antibodies are capable of eliminating several strains of HIV. Patients were able to resist the virus for some time.

In some patients, this therapy lasted up to 4 weeks, but in some cases it was unsuccessful. Because HIV virus can mutate very fast, antibodies cannot detect it and neutralize it. According to the scientists, this therapy should be used alongside with the current drugs. Those antibodies come from humans, so they are natural. They also can improve the weakened immune system. As mentioned, this therapy is at the early stage, but it may lead to improvements and even to the cure! Sadly, this therapy has a high price. But, it will probably be lower in the future. This is a great news for people with HIV!
